This article explains where to find and how to complete the “Total period of education” field in SpeedVisa, which is required by some schools during the application process.

🎯 Who is this for?

Students using SpeedVisa who have been asked by their school to input their total years of education but are unsure where or how to do it.

❓ Question

The school staff asked me to fill in the "Total period of education," but I can't find where to input this on SpeedVisa. How do I fill it in?

✅ Answer

The “Total period of education” field is located at the top of the "Education and Work History" section in SpeedVisa. It is calculated automatically based on the education details you enter.
Please note that studying abroad at a Japanese language school, vocational school, or university in Japan generally requires a total of at least 12 years of education.

📝 Additional Information

What to Include in the Total Period of Education:

  • Only include educational programs you have officially completed (graduated from).

  • Examples: elementary school, junior high school, high school, and university—if completed.

  • If you transferred schools but still graduated from that level, you can still count those years.

What NOT to Include:

  • Current studies (education you are currently enrolled in but have not yet graduated from)

  • Unfinished education (programs you withdrew from or did not complete)
These do not count toward the total years of education.

How to Proceed

  1. Go to the "Education and Work History" section in SpeedVisa.

  2. Input all education history, such as:

    • Elementary school

    • Junior and senior high school

    • University, Vocational school...

⚠️ Input all of your educational history including completed and uncompleted

      3.  Click the “Calculate” button at the top of the section.

     4.  SpeedVisa will automatically show your Total Period of Education based on the data you input.

      5.  Review the total to ensure it’s accurate. If you enter an academic history such as currently enrolled or Dropped out, please manually deduct those years from the total.

Important Notes

  • Only formally completed education counts toward the total years of education.

  • Ongoing or incomplete education must be entered in SpeedVisa but will not count toward total study years.

  • Make sure all start and end dates are correct. Incorrect dates will lead to calculation errors.
