✅️ How to Fill in Educational Status (Extension of Period of Stay)
This article explains how to complete the Educational Status section for your Extension of Period of Stay application. It covers school change status, school information, and total years of education.
📝 Step-by-step Instructions
Before You Start: How This Section Works
This section may include multiple input groups depending on your answer.
Main Input Groups:
- School Change Status
- School Information (only appears in some cases)
- Total Years of Education
How completion is judged:
- When all required or displayed fields in a group are completed, a green checkmark appears.
- Completed groups may collapse automatically.
- You can reopen them anytime before submission.
- If any displayed field is missing, the green checkmark will not appear.
- When all groups are complete, the entire section will also show a green checkmark.
👉 Important:
Unless a field is marked optional, all displayed fields must be completed.
Step 1: Select Your School Change Status
Field:
Did you change schools while your current residence card was valid?
Options:
- Continuing at the Same School
- Changed School (Advancement/Transfer)
- Planning to Change School (Advancement/Transfer)
Case A: Continuing at the Same School
- No additional fields will appear
- This section is considered complete
Reason:
No additional information is required if you have not changed schools.
Case B: Changed School / Planning to Change School
The following input groups will appear:
- School Information
- Total Years of Education
👉 You must complete both groups to get a green checkmark.
Step 2: Enter School Information
Field:
Select the type of school you are currently attending
Options:
- Graduate School (PhD)
- Graduate School (Master)
- University
- Junior College
- Vocational School
- High School
- Japanese Language School
Case A: If You Select “Japanese Language School”
You must enter your highest educational background (excluding the language school).
Why?
Japanese language schools are not treated as formal academic education for this application.
Required Fields and Input Rules
| Field | Input Format / Control | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Type of school for your highest education | Select from list | Choose your highest completed or current academic level |
| School Name | Manual input (half-width English letters recommended) | Enter official school name |

| Expected Graduation Date | Year/Month format (numeric input) | Example: 2026 / 03 |
Enrollment Status Options:
- Graduated
- In School
- On Leave
- Withdrawn
- Transferred
Important Notes:
- Enter your highest academic education, not the language school.
- Make sure the school name matches official records.
- If “In School” is selected, graduation date must be realistic.
Case B: If You Select a School Other Than “Japanese Language School”
You will enter information about your current school.
However, some fields are auto-filled and cannot be edited.
Required Fields and Input Rules
| Field | Input Format / Control | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Type of school for your highest education | Auto-filled (not editable) | Based on system data |
| School Name | Auto-filled (not editable) | Cannot be changed manually |
| Enrollment Status | Fixed as “In School” | Cannot be edited |
| Expected Graduation Date | Year/Month (numeric input) | You must enter this |
Why are some fields locked?
The system already has your school information, so these fields are automatically filled.
⚠️ Important Note (Special Case)
If:
- You are applying through your new (next) school, AND
- You are still enrolled in your current (previous) school
Then:
The following fields may need correction, but you cannot edit them yourself:
- Type of school for your highest education
- School Name
- Enrollment Status
👉 What to do:
- Contact your new school
- Ask them to update the information from their system
Step 3: Enter Total Years of Education
Input Format
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Input type | Half-width numbers only |
| Allowed format | Integers or decimals |
| Examples | 12, 16, 14.5 |
How to Calculate
Count total years from:
- Elementary school → highest education level
Examples
- High school graduate → 12 years
- University graduate → 16 years
How to Check Your Progress
To confirm completion:
- Check if the section has a green checkmark
- If not:
- Open the section
- Check which input group is incomplete
- Review all fields in that group
👉 How to identify an incomplete input group:
- A green checkmark is not shown next to the input group name
- The input group remains expanded (not collapsed)
👉 Ask yourself:
- Are all visible fields filled?
- Did selecting an option show new fields?
- Are there any missing values?
If You Cannot See a Green Checkmark
Common reasons:
- One or more displayed fields are still empty
- Additional fields appeared but were not completed
- Expected graduation date is missing
- You entered invalid format (e.g., full-width numbers)
💡 FAQs / Tips
