How should I fill in the Japanese Language Ability section?

Answer

You can enter your Japanese language ability in one or more of the following three ways. Please complete all the fields that apply to you.

📝 Input Methods

1. Using Results from a Japanese Language Test

  • Test Name: Select the test name from the dropdown (e.g., JLPT, J-Test).

  • Exam Date: Enter the date you took the exam.

  • Level or Score: Choose or input the level/score you received.

2. Using Japanese Study Experience at a School

  • Name of Educational Institution: Enter the official name of the school.

  • Location (Address): Provide the school’s full address.

  • Enrollment and Graduation Dates: Select the period you studied there.

  • Hours of Study: Enter the total number of hours studied at that school. Do not include self-study hours; only include classroom hours.

3. Using Other Methods

If you have any other way to prove your Japanese skills (e.g., study yourself, work experience in Japan), enter the details in this section.

⚠️ You can enter up to 255 characters. If you exceed this limit, an error will occur and the information cannot be saved, so please be careful.

  • Add Entry: Tap the “Add” button to include another proof of language ability.

  • Delete Entry: Tap the trash can icon to remove an entry you no longer need.

  • Not Applicable: If none of the above apply to you, check “Not Applicable.”

  • You can enter multiple proofs if you have more than one test result or study experience.

    Yes, and it is recommended if you have both.

  • What if I made a mistake?
    Tap the trash icon to delete and re-enter the information correctly.

  • Is it okay to leave the section blank if it doesn’t apply?
    Yes. Just check “Not Applicable” to move on.

  • How can I change the Japanese learning period?
    Go to Residence Application > Japanese Language Ability > Prove with Japanese Learning History, edit the fields for "Date of Enroll" and "(Expected) Graduation Date", then click the Save button.
  • Should I include the results of a Japanese Language Test that I did not pass?
    No, you do not need to enter the results of any failed exams.
  • I recently took a Japanese Language Test, but the results are not available yet. Should I still fill in the information?
    Yes, please fill it in for now. In the remarks section, write something like “The results will be released on [Month] [Day].”
  • I don’t have any proof of my Japanese language ability. Will this affect my Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application?
    It depends on your case. Please refer to the following:

    • If your classes in Japan will be conducted in Japanese:
      Proof of Japanese language ability is generally required. If you have sufficient Japanese skills but no official certificate, please consult your school representative.

    • If your classes in Japan will be conducted in English:
