What is a Period of Stay Extension?

This is an official application to extend your current “Student” residence status so you can continue your studies in Japan.

When Can You Apply?

  • You can apply up to 3 months before your current period of stay ends.

  • The review process typically takes 1 to 2 months, so apply early to avoid any issues.

🪪 Step 1: Receive a Request from Your School

  • You’ll receive an email from your school asking you to begin the extension process.

  • Click “Accept the Invitation” to open the input screen in SpeedVisa.

✏️ Step 2: Fill in Required Information

  • Complete all required fields in SpeedVisa.

  • Upload the necessary documents (e.g., certificate files) as instructed.

📤 Step 3: Submit Your Information to the School

  • Once all sections are filled in and checkmarks turn green, tap “Submit” to send your data to the school.

🏢 Step 4: Submit to the Immigration Office

Option A: If You Apply by Yourself

After your school reviews your submission:

  1. They will give you a download link to your completed documents.

  2. Print the documents and gather the required items:

    • Application for Extension of Period of Stay (completed form)

    • A recent photo (3x4 cm, taken within the last 3 months)

    • Your current residence card

    • Your passport

    • Certificate of student status

    • Transcript

  3. Go to the correct Immigration Office (ask your school which one applies).

Option B: If the School Applies on Your Behalf
  • Your school will handle the submission to Immigration.
