Step 2: Payment Sharing for Financial Support Information (Extension of Period of Stay)
This article explains how to complete the “Payment Sharing” of Payment Methods section in the Extension of Period of Stay application. Learn how to divide tuition and living expenses between supporters, how to enter overseas remittance information, and how to fix common errors when the “Save and Continue” button cannot be clicked.
📝 Step-by-step Instructions
1. Understand the Screen Structure
This step has 3 sections:
| Section | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Divide annual tuition costs |
| Monthly living expenses | Divide monthly living expenses |
| Overseas remittance | Enter details about money received from outside Japan |
2. Understand What “Payment Sharing” Means
In this step, you divide the total amounts entered in Step 1 between the people who will pay.
Example:
- Tuition total entered in Step 1 → JPY 800,000
- Monthly living expenses entered in Step 1 → JPY 80,000
You must enter how much each payer will cover.
If There Is Only One Payer
Some students are confused by the word:
“Payment Sharing”
even when there is only one payer.
If only one payer was selected in Step 1:
- Enter the same amount as the total amount entered in Step 1
- The full amount should be assigned to that payer
Example:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition entered in Step 1 | JPY 800,000 |
| Number of payers | 1 |
| Amount to enter for the payer | JPY 800,000 |
The same rule applies to monthly living expenses.
3. Enter Tuition Payment Sharing
At the top of the Tuition section, you will see the total tuition amount entered in Step 1.
Example:
Tuition Remaining JPY XXXXX
This amount decreases as payment amounts are entered.
Who Appears in the List
Only the payers selected in Step 1 will appear.
Possible payers:
- Applicant
- From Part-time Work
- From savings
- Supporter living outside Japan
- Supporter living in Japan
- Scholarship
- Other
Enter the Amount Paid by Each Person
Enter the amount each person will pay in Japanese yen.
If You Selected “Applicant”
Two categories appear:
| Category | Meaning |
|---|---|
| From Part-time Work | Income earned from part-time work in Japan |
| From Savings | Savings held before coming to Japan as a student |
You only need to enter the categories that apply to you.
Example:
- If you pay only using part-time work income, enter only that amount
- If you are not using savings from before coming to Japan, leave “From Savings” empty
Important Meaning of “From Savings”
“From Savings” means savings you already had before coming to Japan as a student.
Even if you saved money from a part-time job in Japan, it should NOT be entered as:
From Savings
Instead, it should still be entered under:
From Part-time Work
Complete the Tuition Section
As you enter amounts:
- The “Tuition Remaining” amount decreases
- When the remaining amount becomes 0, a green checkmark appears
This means the tuition section is completed correctly.
4. Enter Monthly Living Expenses
The Monthly living expenses section works the same way as the Tuition section.
Enter:
- The amount each person will pay for monthly living expenses
Important Rule
The total amount must match.
The “Remaining” amount must become:
0
before you can continue.
5. Enter Overseas Remittance Information
This section is used to explain money received from outside Japan during the past 1 year.
When Overseas Remittance Is Required
This section does NOT appear for:
- Supporters living in Japan
- Applicant’s part-time work income
This is because the money movement happens entirely inside Japan.

💡 FAQs / Tips

- When the totals match correctly, a green checkmark appears
If There Is Only One Payer
Even if only one payer exists, you must still enter the payment amount.
Enter:
- The same amount entered in Step 1

If Money Was Received from Outside Japan
- Select “Yes”
- Enter how the money was received
For “Carried”
If money was brought into Japan multiple times:
- Click “Add”
- Enter each trip separately
For “Remittance” and “Other”
Even if money was sent multiple times:
- Do not enter each transfer separately
- Enter the total amount for the past 1 year
If “Save and Continue” Cannot Be Clicked
Possible reasons:
- The total amounts do not match
- Some amount fields are empty
- Overseas remittance is set to “Yes” but details are not entered
If “Remaining” Does Not Become 0
Possible reasons:
- The total entered amount is too small
- Some amounts are missing
Note:
- Exceeding the amount is usually acceptable
- Being below the required total is the main problem
Q. Can I enter both bank transfers and cash carried into Japan for the same supporter?
A. Yes. For each supporter, you can enter multiple funding methods.
Example:
- Part of the money was sent by bank transfer
- Part of the money was carried into Japan in cash
In this case:
- Enter the bank transfer amount in the “Remittance” section
- Enter the cash amount in the “Carried” section
You can use multiple methods for the same supporter if the student received funds in different ways.
