❓️ When will I receive the result of my application for Status of residence?

The result of your application for status of residence (Certificate of Eligibility or visa extension) usually takes 2–3 months. You cannot check the exact status, so just wait for the Immigration Bureau to contact your school or you directly.

🎯 Who is this for?

International students in Japan who are waiting for the result of:

  • Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) application

  • Extension of Period of Stay (extension of period of stay)

Question

How long does it take to get the result of a CoE or visa extension application?

Answer

Usually 2 to 3 months. The Immigration Bureau publishes monthly average processing times, but the actual period depends on your local immigration office, time of year, and individual situation. You cannot check the individual progress of your application, even if you ask your school or the immigration office.

📝 Additional Information

1. Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)

  • It usually takes 2–3 months for the CoE to be issued.

  • The processing time may vary depending on the time of year and the immigration office.

  • You cannot ask your school or the Immigration Bureau for updates on your specific application.

  • Submit all documents early so you can receive the CoE before your planned arrival in Japan.

2. Extension of Period of Stay (Visa Extension)

  • This also usually takes around 2 months, but in busy periods it may take up to 3 months.

  • You can apply for an extension up to 3 months before your residence card expires.

  • You cannot track your individual application, and your school or immigration office cannot give updates.

  • Apply early and be patient.

Important Notes While Waiting for the Result

1. If your residence card expires while waiting

  • If your visa extension application is accepted by immigration, your card will be stamped with “Application in Process.”

  • You can stay in Japan until the earlier of these two dates:

    • The day you receive your result

    • 2 months after your current residence card expiration date

2. If you plan to leave Japan while your application is being processed

Many students leave Japan during long breaks, like summer vacation. Please be careful:

  • Immigration may request extra documents or contact you by phone while your application is being reviewed.

  • If you applied by yourself, the notice will be sent to your Japanese address or phone number. If you are not in Japan, you may miss it and your application could be denied.

  • If you must leave Japan, keep it short and make sure someone can check your mail and phone.

Re-entry during the 2-month grace period:

  • You can return to Japan during the 2-month grace period, but if you don’t receive your new residence card before that ends, you may overstay and be forced to return to your country.

  • Plan your return early and check immigration office hours in advance.

If your school submitted the application on your behalf:

  • Immigration will contact the school, and the school will then contact you.

  • If you are overseas and don’t respond, your application may be delayed or even denied.

  • Always tell your school your travel period and how to contact you during that time.
